Walks

This is a small selection of easy walks in and around Taupo, easily accessible from Aultmore. There are many more to choose from including those around some of the lesser known Rotorua area lakes and forests. For more information we suggest obtaining the Dept of Conservation booklet "A Guide to walks & hikes around the Lake Taupo District".

Huka Falls Walkway:

From Taupo's Spa Thermal Park this walk takes you along the banks of the Waikato River to the mighty Huka Falls. Return on the same track or arrange transport pick up at the falls. Alternatively, do the walk the other way round and finish with a natural hot pool soak in the Spa Park.

Walking time approx 2 hours return.

Huka Falls to Atatiatia

Treat this as an extension to the Huka Falls Walkway or as a separate walk.. Another lovely stretch of the Waikato River bank.. Start either end but try to time it so that you are at the Rapids when the control gates are opened (check for times).

Walking time approx 4 hours return.

Craters of the Moon Walking

Starts approx 6km north of Taupo on SH1, then follow the signs. A walk with a difference in a lunar landscape. The walk is in an active thermal area formed by the Wairakei Geothermal field. You will see bubbling mud pools, steam vents and hot craters. Well worth seeing.

Approx 1 hour loop track

Acacia Bay

For magnificent scenery and views, you can combine all of the following or do them separately: Mapara Walkway (approx 20 minutes return); Rangatira Point Walking track (approx 1.5 hours return) and the Whakamoenga Walking Track (approx 1 hour return). If you combine them all allow approx 2.5 hours return trip.

Tahunatara Point Walking Track:

Drive out to Kinloch for the start of this walk. Starts from the beach and is an easy walk along the lakeshore. Wonderful views out to the Karangahape Cliffs and on to the Tongariro Park mountains. There are picnic & fishing opportunities along the way. Approx walking time 1.5 hours return.

Hikes & Tramps:

This is a small selection of hikes & day tramps within easy distance of Aultmore. We recommend obtaining further information from the Dept. of Conservation or the Taupo Visitor Information Centre before undertaking these excursions.

Tongariro Crossing:

To experience the world famous Tongariro Crossing take an early shuttle from Taupo. The shuttle service returns you to Taupo at day's end. This full day excursion requires a good level of fitness and equipment. For more information click here

Lake Okataina:

Being away from the main routes, Lake Okataina is an unspoilt wonderland. The Eastern Okataina track is approx 8km in each direction, making a good day's outing from Aultmore. Wonderful views, forest, swimming and fishing opportunities!

Whirinaki Track:

The full Whirinaki track is a 2 day tramp, or if combined with the Te Hoe Loop Walk becomes a 4 day one. This is majestic and dense native podacarp forest with waterfalls & the Whirinaki River to enjoy. Hut accommodation is available, then return to Aultmore to unwind! There is a Dept. Of conservation booklet "Tramping & Walking in the Whirinaki Forest Park".
